  5. Congratulations on selecting a PUMA Shareware product.  At PUMA we are
  6. dedicated to producing quality software that is straightforward and easy
  7. to use so that the student can concentrate on mastering the lessons.  You
  8. can master the program in less than 5 minutes and will not find lots of
  9. switches or options to learn.

  11. Vocabulary BLASTER is designed to increase your vocabulary skills quickly
  12. and easily.  It is fashioned around the question and answer format of
  13. FLASHCARDS and should be used in conjunction with a good dictionary.  The
  14. word definitions presented should be treated as memory joggers and not as
  15. the final definition.  This is because many of the words may have several
  16. meanings and your dictionary should be consulted for actual definitions
  17. and to understand the full context of the meanings.

  19. The program is designed to run on any IBM compatible computer and the
  20. dictionary used can be hardbound or, for best results, a multimedia
  21. electronic version with audio which provides the correct pronunciation.
  22. I like to use Windows95 to switch quickly between a multimedia dictionary
  23. and FLASHCARDS.  The dictionary is my technical expert and FLASHCARDS
  24. handles the memorization.

  31. Getting started:
  32.  
  33. At startup you will be given two options.  The first is the level (1 - 5)
  34. and the second is whether you want "definition" or "word" input.  At first
  35. the "word" input will be a bit easier.  You may, however, alternate word
  36. and definition input until you master the cards in both modes.
  37.  
  38. The only other thing you need to know is how to get out of the program if
  39. you want to return to the operating system.  That's easy, press <CTRL e>
  40. followed by <Enter>.
  41.  
  42. So you start up and are presented with a question, and you haven't got a
  43. clue.  Take a wild guess or just press the enter key.  FLASHCARD will beep
  44. and display the correct "Answer" above your input.  The cursor then travels
  45. to the upper right corner of the screen where it waits for you to <hit any
  46. key>.  Note the difference between your input and the correct answer and
  47. then bump a key for the next question.

  49. You will likely strike out 10 times or more before you complete the set
  50. successfully.  When you make a error, the question will repeat after a few
  51. times.

  53. In each lesson, the student is presented with 5 sets of 20 cards.  Each set
  54. is called a level and the program randomly selects from the 20 cards, 50
  55. times.  The object is to complete the 50 questions without incurring more
  56. that two errors (three "Strikes" and you're out).  If you get the third
  57. strike, the high score is updated and you start over.  Typically you would
  58. start with level one and repeat it until you have "Successfully" completed
  59. it 10 times.

  61. At level two, you will be presented with a second set of 20 cards.  At level
  62. two you work your way through the 2nd set and then the first set (you
  63. already know these), until you have completed both sets "Successfully"
  64. 10 times.

  66. By the time you get to level 5 you will work your way from level 5 to level
  67. 4 to level 3 to level 2 to level 1.  As you progress through the series, the
  68. questions seem easier.

  72. When you have mastered lesson 1 continue with lesson 2.  I like to go back
  73. and review all previous lessons after completing a lesson.  The repetition
  74. and review will quickly make these words yours to command.

  78. Vocabulary BLASTER is "NOT" free software.  It is marketed under the
  79. Shareware concept which gives you a chance to try before buying it.  You
  80. may use Vocabulary BLASTER on a trial basis for a week, after which you
  81. are obligated to register this software or pass it on to a friend.

  83. Most shareware downloaded is a limited version and registration yields the
  84. complete program with all the bells and whistles.  This is not true of
  85. Vocabulary BLASTER.  The program you have in your possession is the complete
  86. and up to date version.  Registration permits your use of this program
  87. beyond the trial period and gives you the satisfaction of contributing to
  88. the development of other educational products.

  91. characterized by low overhead and low prices and has the ultimate
  92. guarantee -- If you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.  We hope
